LONDON — Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has warned that small AI models could soon become capable of behaving like computer worms, spreading between internet-connected devices without direct human assistance.
The warning highlights a possible new cybersecurity risk as technology companies increasingly integrate AI into phones, computers, cars and household devices.
A computer worm is malicious software that can copy itself and spread from one system to another. If AI-enabled versions become practical, poorly secured devices could become vulnerable to attacks that spread rapidly across networks.
Connected cameras, smart home appliances and other internet-enabled equipment could face risks if they rely on outdated software or weak security measures.
However, the warning does not mean that fully autonomous AI worms are already widespread. It describes a developing risk based on research into the capabilities of smaller AI models.
The findings underline the importance of updating device software, using strong passwords and securing internet-connected equipment. Researchers and technology companies are likely to face increasing pressure to address such risks as AI becomes more widely deployed.
