4.9-magnitude earthquake strikes Uttarakhand, tremors felt across North India

NEW DELHI — A 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand on Tuesday night, with tremors felt across several parts of northern India, including Delhi-NCR, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.


According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 10:23:13 p.m. IST on October 6, with its epicentre in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 13 kilometres.

Tremors were felt in several parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region, including Noida and Gurugram, shortly after the earthquake in Uttarakhand. Residents in different areas reported brief and mild shaking.

The tremors were relatively low in intensity in Delhi-NCR and other areas where they were felt. There have been no reports of casualties or major damage so far.
