BEND, OREGON — Three children and a teacher were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday. The 16-year-old suspected gunman also died at the scene, police said.
The children killed were aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to hospital.
Police said the attacker forced his way into the school by shooting through locked doors. A community member who saw the suspect entering the building pursued him and shot him, helping prevent further loss of life, according to local authorities.
Emergency services responded after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers secured the school, while children were escorted to safety and reunited with their families.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed grief over the deaths and thanked school staff, parents, emergency responders and the community member who intervened.
The motive for the attack remains under investigation. The shooting has renewed concerns about school safety and gun violence in the United States.
