BARHAM — India’s Putul Sonowal has secured the country’s first-ever medal at the World Bowls Champion of Champions after reaching the men’s singles semifinals in Barham, New South Wales, Australia. The 43-year-old from Assam achieved the milestone with a victory in the quarterfinals.
Sonowal won five of his six matches in the opening round. He then defeated Botswana’s Edwin Nyoka Jr. 5–0 in his final group match to finish at the top of his section and advance to the quarterfinals. He followed that performance with a win over Singapore’s Harriman Yuen to book his place in the last four and guarantee India a historic medal.
Sonowal will face Scotland’s Iain McLean in the semifinal on Saturday. If he wins, he will meet either Canada’s Pat Bird or Australia’s Max Kleinig in the final.
A havildar with Assam Police, Sonowal has enjoyed an impressive year. He won the men’s singles gold at the Asian Lawn Bowls Championship earlier in 2026 and attracted attention at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games by defeating Canada’s Ryan Bester.
His achievement at the World Bowls Champion of Champions marks a major milestone for Indian lawn bowls and offers fresh encouragement for the sport’s growth in the country.
