PUNE — A 34-year-old woman whose family believed she was pursuing an MBA in London was found dead in a rented apartment in Pune, after online food delivery transactions helped trace her whereabouts in India.
Mugdha Deshmukh, a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, was found dead inside her apartment at the Lodha Belmondo residential complex in Gahunje. She had reportedly returned from the UK in August without informing her family.
Mugdha travelled to London in July 2025 to pursue an MBA and also worked part-time. She remained in regular contact with her parents. However, her phone became unreachable from October 24, prompting her family to seek help in locating her. A friend in London later informed them that Mugdha had left the UK towards the end of August.
Her father, Avinash Deshmukh, examined her bank statements and noticed transactions involving online platforms, including Swiggy and Zomato, between October 8 and 25. This raised suspicions that she had returned to India. Police subsequently examined her food delivery records and traced an order to the apartment in Gahunje.
When police reached the flat, its door was locked from inside. They gained entry using an alternative key and found her body. Investigators learnt that she had rented the apartment in April but began living there after returning from the UK in August. She was reportedly teaching some subjects online to MBA students while staying in Pune.
Police said no visible external injury marks were found during the preliminary examination. Her viscera has been preserved for forensic analysis to establish the cause of death. Investigators are also examining why she returned to India without informing her family and the circumstances surrounding her death.
