NEW DELHI — Australia has expanded biometric collection requirements for visa applicants in India. From October 26, 2026, some applicants submitting new Australian visa applications from India may be required to provide fingerprints and a digital facial image, according to the Australian High Commission.
The Department of Home Affairs will notify applicants who need to provide biometric information and explain how to complete the process. Depending on their circumstances, applicants may be asked to attend an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre in person or may be eligible to submit their details through the Australian Immi App.
The new requirements apply to applications lodged on or after October 26. Applications submitted before that date will not be affected. The High Commission said visa processing times are not expected to be adversely affected, provided applicants complete any required biometric steps promptly.
The expansion is intended to strengthen identity verification, reduce fraud and protect applicants against identity misuse. Australian authorities said biometric information would be collected, stored and managed in accordance with applicable laws and privacy safeguards.
Applicants should wait for official instructions from the Department of Home Affairs before arranging biometric collection or attempting to use the app.
