New Delhi— India has moved beyond simply advocating dialogue and diplomacy to become more actively involved in efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said. He said New Delhi is currently holding discussions with both Moscow and Kyiv as part of its efforts to help find a way towards ending the conflict.
Speaking at the Munich Leaders’ Meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar said India’s position has remained clear that the conflict should end through dialogue, diplomacy and negotiations. He said India has become “a little more involved beyond advocacy” in recent months and is engaging with both Russia and Ukraine.
According to Jaishankar, the discussions include the safety of shipping in the Black Sea, grain and energy exports, and possibilities for avoiding further attacks. He said these conversations are ongoing and that India is trying to be helpful on issues of immediate concern to both sides.
India’s increased diplomatic engagement comes as both Moscow and Kyiv have indicated greater openness to proposals aimed at reducing hostilities. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha recently said India had put forward a broad proposal for a possible ceasefire and described it as the most comprehensive among proposals received from several countries.
Jaishankar also reiterated the importance of India’s longstanding relationship with Russia, saying the ties have evolved over the years and now encompass trade, investment, energy, defence, nuclear cooperation and space. At the same time, he stressed that India continues to support diplomatic efforts to bring the Russia-Ukraine conflict to an end.
