NEW DELHI — A Russian drone strike on a Turkish-owned cargo vessel in the Black Sea killed two people, including the ship's captain. The Indian Embassy in Romania confirmed that all three Indian nationals on board are safe. One of the Indian crew members was injured and is receiving medical treatment in Romania.
The vessel, MV Royad Mammadov, was carrying grain from the Ukrainian port of Izmail to Ravenna in Italy when it came under attack. A fire broke out on the ship and it later sank. Romanian authorities said 11 crew members were rescued. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy blamed Russian drones for the attack, while Russia has not issued a specific confirmation of its involvement in this incident.
The Indian Embassy in Romania has remained in close contact with local authorities and the hospital to ensure the safety and well-being of the Indian crew members. Indian Ambassador Manoj Mohapatra spoke with the three Indian nationals and hospital officials and confirmed that all three were safe and receiving necessary medical care.
India has strongly opposed attacks on civilian commercial shipping. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described attacks on commercial vessels from the Black Sea to the Gulf region as “completely unacceptable”. He also reiterated India's position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
