BHOPAL — An India-born female cheetah, KJP21, has given birth to five healthy cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh, taking India’s total cheetah population to 60. Of these, 41 cheetahs have now been born in India, according to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
KJP21, a 32-month-old female cheetah, is the third female cheetah born in India to reproduce in the country. Mukhi and KGP12 had earlier given birth in India. The latest birth marks an important step in the emergence of the next generation of cheetahs on Indian soil.
The father of the five cubs is a male cheetah brought to India from Botswana. The birth therefore also marks the beginning of a new Botswana genetic lineage within India’s growing cheetah population. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav described the development as another important milestone for Project Cheetah, the country’s cheetah reintroduction programme.
The latest births also highlight the progress of Project Cheetah from the initial phase of bringing cheetahs from Africa to India towards establishing successive generations through breeding on Indian soil. The Union Minister congratulated the veterinarians, field staff, managers and others associated with the programme for their continued efforts.
