India-Canada CEPA Talks Enter Fifth Round

OTTAWA — India and Canada have begun the fifth round of negotiations on the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The five-day talks will run from October 5 to 9, with both countries aiming to complete the agreement by the end of 2026.

The latest round follows the completion of the fourth round in New Delhi on September 18. The negotiations are focused on strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries, with both sides working to speed up discussions and narrow differences ahead of the year-end target.

Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met on October 2 on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting. They reviewed progress in the CEPA negotiations, with Sidhu stressing the importance of reaching a mutually beneficial agreement by the end of the year.

Two-way merchandise trade between Canada and India reached $13.6 billion in 2025, while total trade in goods and services stood at $30.4 billion. Canada has also set a goal of doubling two-way trade with India to $70 billion annually by 2030.

The proposed agreement is expected to create greater opportunities for businesses and investors in both countries. Key areas of interest include energy, critical minerals, aerospace, clean technology and life sciences, as both sides work to expand their long-term economic partnership.
