TEHRAN — A high-level Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday to discuss efforts to revive stalled peace negotiations between Iran and the United States, amid growing concerns over renewed tensions in the Middle East.
The delegation, led by a senior adviser to Qatar's prime minister, held discussions with Iranian officials on bilateral relations and regional developments, according to Iranian state media. The visit is part of Qatar's ongoing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and create conditions for the resumption of negotiations.
Qatar, along with Pakistan, has been playing a mediating role between Washington and Tehran. However, differences remain over the conditions for restarting talks. The United States wants Iran's nuclear programme to be included in the negotiations, while Tehran has called for restrictions on its ports and oil exports to be lifted.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has added urgency to the diplomatic efforts. The strategic waterway carries around one-fifth of the world's oil supplies, and any disruption to shipping could affect global energy markets and international trade.
With concerns mounting over a possible escalation of military tensions, Qatar's latest initiative is seen as an important diplomatic effort. However, neither side has announced an agreement to resume direct negotiations.
