KOLKATA — Renowned Indian painter and former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Jogen Chowdhury died in Kolkata on Sunday morning, aged 87.
He had been receiving treatment for a rare form of blood cancer at a private hospital. His death marks a significant loss for India’s modern art community.
Chowdhury was widely recognised for his distinctive use of expressive lines to portray human emotions, body language and social realities. His work spanned several mediums, including ink, watercolour, pastel and oil painting.
Born on February 16, 1939, in what was then undivided Bengal, he moved to Kolkata with his family following Partition. Over the decades, he established himself as one of the prominent figures in modern Indian art.
He also served as a Trinamool Congress member of the Rajya Sabha from 2014 to 2020. His contribution to Indian art extended across generations, leaving a lasting mark on the country’s cultural landscape.
