MUMBAI — The Indian Navy has commissioned INS Mangrol, an indigenous anti-submarine warfare vessel built by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai and was presided over by Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, head of the Western Naval Command.
Mangrol is the third vessel in the Navy’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft class. It is designed to detect and counter underwater threats in coastal waters, where shallow conditions can limit the operations of larger warships. More than 80 per cent of the vessel’s components are indigenous, according to the Navy.
The ship is equipped with an Abhay hull-mounted sonar, lightweight torpedoes, an indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher and the Mareech advanced torpedo decoy system. Its induction is expected to strengthen the Navy’s ability to monitor underwater activity and protect coastal areas and important maritime installations.
