DUBAI — Flydubai has stopped all flights to and from Israel after a fight between pilots inside the cockpit forced a passenger plane to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.
Flight FZ 1073 was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 with 174 passengers on board. During the flight, a violent fight broke out in the cockpit, causing the plane to suddenly drop thousands of feet and send out emergency signals.
The plane’s Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, was seriously injured during the attack. However, he fought back bravely and helped passengers and crew members control the attacker. Another pilot then took control of the aircraft and landed it safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Both injured pilots were taken to a hospital, while all 174 passengers were later taken to Israel on another flight.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Captain Machchhar for his bravery. Flydubai said an investigation is underway and flights to Israel will stay suspended until it is completed.
