India Claims Historic Women's Hockey Gold, Secures 2028 Olympic Berth

Kakamigahara—Ending a 44-year drought, the Indian women’s hockey team clinched a historic gold medal at the Asian Games with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over China in the final. Along with the continental title, this triumphant win also guarantees the team a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Lalremsiami scored the decisive winning goal in the 10th minute of the match with a brilliant tomahawk shot. China launched a series of aggressive counter-attacks following the goal, but the resolute Indian defense held firm to keep them at bay. A crucial moment came when veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia pulled off a vital penalty stroke save, effectively sealing the match in India's favor.

India had last won the Asian Games gold in women's hockey back in 1982. Although the team reached the finals in 1998 and 2018, they had to settle for silver on both occasions. India earned their place in the final by defeating South Korea 2-0 in the semifinals.

With Paris Olympics silver-medalists China forced to take second place, Japan claimed the bronze medal after defeating South Korea 4-2 in a penalty shootout during the third-place match.
