KOLKATA — Seven people have been arrested following a stampede at a Durga Puja pavilion in Kolkata that killed 19 people and injured 25 others. Two of the injured remain in intensive care, according to reports published on Monday morning.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pavilion in north Kolkata. Heavy rain prompted people to seek shelter at the venue, adding to the crowd and contributing to the chaos.
Investigators are examining possible safety failures, including narrow approach roads, a single exit, inexperienced volunteers and announcements that may have worsened the panic.
Those arrested include the secretary and vice-president of the organising committee. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the deaths and examining whether adequate crowd-control arrangements were in place.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about public safety at large religious gatherings in India, particularly the need for adequate exits, trained personnel and effective emergency procedures.
