WASHINGTON / DUBAI — The United States has initiated a significant military force deployment to the Middle East, dispatching 2,000 Marines alongside naval strike assets, as maritime security in the region fractured further following a fresh strike on a supertanker navigating the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Defense officials confirmed that the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the Makin Island amphibious ready group departed San Diego to reinforce American naval capabilities in the region. By late autumn, the Pentagon expects to maintain three aircraft carrier strike groups and two amphibious landing groups surrounding Iran, providing Washington with expansive operational posture during ongoing regional hostilities.
Supertanker Hit in Vital Shipping Lane
The troop movement coincides with a major safety incident in the Strait of Hormuz, where a commercial supertanker carrying an estimated 2.5 million barrels of oil was struck by an unidentified projectile.
According to advisory updates from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel caught fire following the impact near the Omani coastline, though early reports indicate the crew managed to avoid casualties.
The incident underscores the lingering vulnerability of international shipping lanes in the narrow waterway, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's petroleum flows.
Diplomatic Stalled Efforts and Military Readiness
The escalation occurs against a backdrop of stalled diplomatic maneuvering between Washington and Tehran. U.S. leadership recently dismissed a proposed agreement aimed at guaranteeing safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, deeming the Iranian terms insufficient given recent military developments.
With U.S. naval units positioning closer to the Persian Gulf and security risks mounting along critical maritime routes, international energy markets remain on edge as regional tensions enter a volatile new phase.
