New Delhi: A march by the opposition 'INDIA' front against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in the electoral roll revision, resulted in clashes and dramatic scenes in Delhi.

The two leaders were taken into police custody after hours of protests. All the protesters, including Congress MPs, were arrested and removed. The police action took place in front of All India Radio Bhavan. Rahul Gandhi also tried to get out of the police vehicle. But his attempt to get out through the window was unsuccessful. Priyanka Gandhi had already come out of the vehicle.

Opposition MPs including Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and K.C. Venugopal were forcibly taken into custody by the Delhi Police while they were marching from the Parliament House to the Nirvachan Sadan, the headquarters of the Election Commission. They were released late at night after being kept in custody for hours.

The Election Commission had assured that the leaders of India would meet on the 15th. But the Congress rejected this proposal. The police action followed. The Congress announced that there was no change in its demand to meet today itself.

KC Venugopal said that there was nothing wrong with meeting the commission and expressing his position. KC also said that he did not agree with the opinion that Gyanesh Kumar should not be met.

The incident is as follows:

  • Police set up barricades Police deployed heavy security and set up barricades near Nirvachan Sadan, citing that prior permission had not been sought for the march. There was a scuffle in the area as leaders who tried to move forward were stopped on the way. Some leaders tried to jump over the barricades.

  • Sit-in at All India Radio Unable to reach the Commission headquarters, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka and other MPs entered the nearby All India Radio Bhavan premises and started a sit-in protest. The leaders made it clear that they would not leave the place without meeting the Election Commissioner and the opposition delegation.

  • Hours of uncertainty: After a blockade that lasted for more than eight hours, the leaders were forcibly removed by the police and taken to various police stations by buses.

  • Opposition's stance: Priyanka Gandhi criticized the government as a government of cowards that denies democratic rights. Rahul Gandhi also responded that officials and administrators who are involved in vote-rigging and election fraud will not be spared.

Opposition parties have decided to expand their protests in the coming days, questioning the credibility of the Central Election Commission.
