Delhi–Guwahati Bullet Train Corridor Gets PM’s Approval

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposed Northern Bullet Train Corridor, which will connect Delhi with Guwahati through several major cities in northern and eastern India, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday.

Speaking in Varanasi, the minister said the proposed high-speed rail network would pass through Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Patna and Siliguri before reaching Guwahati. The corridor is expected to significantly improve connectivity across northern and northeastern India.

According to the travel-time estimates shared by the minister, the journey from Delhi to Agra could take just 59 minutes, while Delhi–Kanpur travel would take around one hour and 45 minutes. The journey to Lucknow is projected to take two hours and 12 minutes, while passengers could reach Varanasi from Delhi in approximately three hours and 33 minutes. These are proposed journey times, and the service is not yet operational.

Vaishnaw said the project would be developed under the Centre’s Make in India initiative, with Indian technology and domestic expertise playing a major role in construction. Key components, including pillars and girders, are expected to be manufactured within the country.

The minister said the project would create opportunities for young people, middle-income families and workers in small industries, while improving access to major cities for business, education and healthcare.

The corridor is currently in the design phase. Details regarding construction timelines, project costs and the completion schedule are yet to be announced.
