SEOUL — South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for a powerful government-wide body to coordinate the country’s cybersecurity efforts, warning that the existing system is not adequately protecting critical infrastructure and public services.
Speaking at a cabinet meeting on November 3, Lee said the current approach relied too heavily on inspections and responses after cyber incidents. He called for a more preventive system and suggested creating a high-level body to coordinate security functions spread across government agencies, with cooperation between the public and private sectors.
South Korea’s National Intelligence Service has also launched emergency security inspections covering more than 2,100 central government ministries, local governments and public institutions, according to reports. The move comes amid growing concerns over cyber intrusions, including attacks targeting financial institutions and cryptocurrency-related systems.
