TEHRAN — Iran says it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States meets its conditions, as diplomatic efforts continue to end the conflict between the two countries.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal, developed through discussions with Qatari mediators, would require the US to take certain steps on the first day, allowing shipping through the strategic waterway to return to normal on the second day.
Iran had initially proposed a seven-day timeline but later shortened it to two days following consultations with Qatar. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei reiterated on Monday that Tehran was prepared to implement the plan within this timeframe if its demands were met.
Iranian negotiators recently completed three consecutive days of consultations with Qatari mediators in Doha before leaving the Qatari capital. However, diplomatic efforts are continuing, with a draft proposal for an agreement reportedly being circulated.
A final agreement has not yet been reached, and Washington has not publicly accepted Iran's proposed terms. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz therefore remains conditional on further negotiations.
The waterway is a vital route for global oil shipments, and its continued disruption has raised concerns over energy supplies, shipping costs and international trade.
