DEHRADUN — Rescue teams are continuing their search for eight trekkers missing in the Kedartal region of Uttarakhand after heavy snowfall and avalanches blocked their return route. Difficult terrain and the risk of further avalanches have made it challenging for rescuers to reach the affected area.
The missing group includes five trekkers from West Bengal, two women from Uttar Pradesh and a guide from Uttarkashi. They were part of a 12-member group that set out from Gangotri on October 27. Four support staff members, including three porters and a cook, were rescued safely on October 31.
Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), forest department and police are involved in the operation. On Monday, a specialised high-altitude rescue team from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering and the SDRF was deployed by helicopter to assist the search.
However, multiple avalanches along the route beyond Bhoj Kharak have prevented ground teams from advancing further. Earlier aerial searches also failed to locate the missing trekkers or their tents.
Rescue agencies are assessing the weather and terrain conditions to identify a safe route into the affected area. The search is being conducted in difficult conditions at an altitude of around 4,000 metres, where heavy snowfall and the threat of further avalanches continue to hamper operations.
Authorities are continuing coordinated efforts to locate the missing group.
