NEW DELHI — Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has proposed an open debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a range of issues, including India's financial system, the India-US trade deal, the Adani case and allegations concerning foreign connections.
Gandhi said the discussion could take place at any venue, with members of the media and young people present. He also suggested that the Prime Minister could choose the moderator, mentioning RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as a possible option. Gandhi renewed the proposal in a video message and invited senior BJP leaders to encourage the Prime Minister to take part.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman responded that Parliament was the appropriate forum for such discussions. She said Gandhi could raise the issues in the House in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition and emphasised that those seeking answers should also be prepared to hear the responses.
Nirmala Sitharaman also referred to Home Minister Amit Shah's earlier statement that the government was ready to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The exchange has brought attention to Gandhi's proposal for a public debate and the government's position that the issues should be discussed through parliamentary proceedings.
