THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Measles cases are increasing in Kerala’s northern districts, prompting the Health Department to strengthen preventive measures. Kannur, Malappuram and Kozhikode are among the districts reporting a rise in infections. A total of 538 cases had been confirmed across the state as of October 2026, while more than 1,000 people had developed symptoms.
The death of 15-year-old Dakshith Babu in Kannur has taken the reported death toll from measles in the state to four. Health authorities are monitoring the situation and intensifying vaccination and other preventive measures in affected areas.
Health Services Director Dr V. Meenakshi said most infections were being reported among children who had not received the measles vaccine. Districts with lower vaccination coverage have recorded a higher number of cases, she said.
The Health Department has urged parents to ensure that children receive their scheduled Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccinations. The first dose is recommended between nine and 12 months of age, followed by a second dose between 16 and 24 months. The vaccine is available free of charge at government health centres. Vitamin A supplementation and other preventive measures are also being carried out in affected areas.
