BEIJING: China's government issued draft rules aimed at making it easier for some foreigners to enter China for visits to tourism sites along the Chinese border.
Travel groups organised by tour agencies in border areas in China can choose their port of entry and exit "flexibly", the Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement on Monday (Sept 19), without giving specifics on locations and dates.
China has shut its borders to foreign tourists since the outbreak of the new coronavirus in 2020, with only specific groups of foreign nationals allowed to enter the country, such as those holding certain work visas.
Rules have been steadily loosened in recent months, from permitting foreign students with legitimate residence permits to enter China to the resume of more direct flights between China and several nations. Additionally, there is less of a foreign arrivals quarantine.
More than ten nations, including Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, border China.
Covid-19 instances that are imported into Chinese cities near the border are frequently linked to overland crossings by both foreigners and Chinese citizens.
The chairman of the international tourism institute at the China Tourism Academy, a government think tank, Mr. Yang Jinsong, said: "I believe cross-border tourism will revive, though I can't estimate when."
The tourism department is unable to make a determination because it is dependent on the Covid situation and the results of virus control measures.
