NEW DELHI — The Bharatiya Janata Party has named Dinesh Arya as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha election in Uttarakhand and actor-turned-politician Rukmini Mallick, popularly known as Koel Mallick, for the Rajya Sabha by-election in West Bengal.
The candidates were approved by the BJP’s Central Election Committee on Sunday. The Uttarakhand election is being held as part of the biennial Rajya Sabha polls, while the West Bengal contest is a by-election following Mallick’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha in July.
Mallick had entered the Rajya Sabha as a Trinamool Congress member and later left the party to join the BJP. Her nomination gives the BJP a prominent political face from West Bengal for the upcoming contest.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for October 16. The biennial election covers 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh and one in Uttarakhand, while the West Bengal seat will be filled through a separate by-election.
