By 2027, three new elective hospitals for Cork, Dublin, and Galway are anticipated to be operational, though the government has not yet disclosed the exact locations of the developments.

According to The Irish Examiner, the initiatives are a part of the government's National Elective Ambulatory Care Strategy, which was adopted in December.

A new Sláintecare approach to manage outpatient treatments and surgical waiting lists heavily relies on the hospitals.

Stephen Donnelly, the minister of health, stated in an update in answer to Colm Burke of Fine Gael's parliamentary inquiry that it is not yet possible to establish a schedule for the projects' design, planning, and construction.

But he said: “However, based on current plans it is intended that they will be fully operational no later than 2027.”

He said that “a project-level Preliminary Business Case for Cork is now complete and is being reviewed under the newly introduced External Assurance Process”.

Donnelly stated that the review for the Cork project is almost finished and that the Major Projects Advisory Group of the Department of Public Expenditure would soon receive the Business Case for consideration.

"After these procedures are complete, a Memorandum with a recommendation on a site option will be sent to the government for review and approval.

"Work has already started to guarantee a smooth transition to the next phase of Public Spending Code Gate 2 - Detailed Project Design, Planning, and Procurement," he added, adding that this will allow for the quick advancement of the necessary structures and workstreams."

Mr. Burke stated that he hopes to speak with Minister Donnelly about getting more specific information about the site of the Cork hospital.

"It is ten months now since the HSE and the South/Southwest Group gave the report into the Department of Health. It then has to go to Minister Michael McGrath’s department, and we just have to get on with it," he said.
