President Joe Biden challenged Democratic voters on Friday that if they elect at least two more senators in November elections, it would open the possibility of Democrats removing the filibuster and restoring federal abortion rights for women.
At a Democratic National Committee rally, Biden suggested the two extra Democrats would allow the Democratic-controlled Senate to remove a legislative roadblock known as the filibuster that requires a 60-vote majority to overcome.
Democrats hold a bare majority in the Senate now, and two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema, have opposed ending the filibuster.
According to Biden's statement, a vote to abolish the filibuster, which can be determined by a simple majority, would have his support. Democrats would need to take back the House and pick up two seats in the Senate for any such effort to succeed. The majority of forecasters believe Republicans will likely take control of the House.
In the run-up to the Nov. 8 legislative elections, Biden has made restoring protections lost in the Supreme Court's June decision to overrule the seminal 1973 Roe v. Wade case a primary topic of his stump speeches.
We're going to codify Roe and make Roe the law of the nation once more, I promise you, if you give me two more senators in the US Senate, declared Biden.
"The MAGA Republicans, in my opinion, have no idea about the influence that American women have. They're about to learn, I'll tell you that much."
The Current Population Survey reports that 68.4% of women and 65.0% of males cast ballots in the 2020 election. 9.7 million more women than men cast ballots. A significant increase in women registering to vote has occurred after the Supreme Court's Roe ruling.
