Clare: A Ukrainian girl was found with multiple stab wounds to the neck at a County Clare refugee accommodation centre. An eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital after she was allegedly stabbed yesterday morning. The child's mother was also found unconscious in the compound and remains in critical condition.
They were using this house as an emergency shelter. The mother and daughter are Ukrainian nationals who recently moved into an extended settlement housing 15 refugees who fled the war-torn country. The Ukrainian girl had started attending a local primary school several weeks ago.
There are serious injuries, including multiple suspected stab wounds to the neck. First transferred to University Hospital Limerick and then unable to be airlifted due to concerns about bad weather, the boy has now been transferred to a specialist hospital in Dublin with a Garda escort.
The girl's mother, in her mid-forties, was found unconscious at the scene and taken to Limerick Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition. Investigators are awaiting the woman's toxicology report to determine the cause of the incident. Gardai are now carrying out a major investigation to establish exactly what happened at the house in the village of Clarecastle, located in Abbeyclare on the outskirts of Ennis.
An incident room has been set up at Ennis Garda Station and a family liaison officer has been appointed to the family. Gardai are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact the investigation team at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
