Dublin: The Cost of Living Coalition protest was highlighted by organizers of the Cost of Living Coalition as one of the biggest protests seen in Dublin since the Right2Water marches in 2015.
As before, the parallels are clear, electricity and the means to heat our homes and cook our food represent just as much basic, basic infrastructure as the right to water. In the same way that water charges have created a coalition, it seems that cost-of-living protests may grow. Protesters claimed that the latest rise in the cost of living had hit them harder than the recession. Despite the current pressures families face to cope with the rising cost of living, the mood of the march was apt.
Huge turnout at #CostOfLivingSept24 march.

No more excuses! The Govt must act on this crisis and provide REAL relief to workers and families pic.twitter.com/lHKnx4LmYb
At the start of the march, a voice-over PA system warned marchers that the march would serve as a "springboard" for further demonstrations before the march began, said People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy. UNITE The Union, ICTU, Sinn Féin, Extinction Rebellion, People Before Profit, Social Democrats, Community Action Tenants' Union - UNITE The Union, ICTU, Sinn Féin, each marched from Parnell Square to Leinster House under their own banner.
Massive turnout from so many different corners of society.

Standing up to the increasing inequality and cost of living crisis. #CostOfLivingCrisis #CostOfLivingSept24 pic.twitter.com/PhZPCWbk1H
A number of local groups were in attendance, such as Donegal, which is fighting for a better remediation scheme in the mica scandal, and Carlow, which is campaigning for water services. A woman performed herself with a charcoal briquette in one hand, several candles in the other, and a hot water bottle around her waist. Another had written his slogan on an A4 envelope taped to a thin strip of plywood.
Well done to the tens of thousands of people who came out today. A strong message to the government before the budget to protect people from energy company profiteering.

Next step is regional and local protests on 12 November.#CostOfLivingSept24 pic.twitter.com/GhHQEq7wYp
What the government needs to consider ahead of this week's budget is to see and not reject the common people and highlight their demands, even as those who organized and participated in the march say it is not seen as a symbol of a single movement. That is, it was a coalition protest of several groups.
Political leaders such as Fr. Peter McQuarrie, Niamh Macdonald of Spark, Seamus Dooley, Boyd Barrett and Mary Lou Macdonald of the ICTU - have argued that the movement to tackle cost of living rises has long transcended party politics.
I was very proud to be part of the fantastic Cost of Living Protest in Dublin today with 20000 people marching! Prices are rising and so are we!✊@COLCIreland @forsa_union_ie @pb4p @_HousingCrisis #CostOfLiving #CostOfLivingCrisissept24 #CostofLivingDemo pic.twitter.com/gkGZitb9Y1

The presence of Indian social activist Mr. Rupesh Kumar Panicker and 12-year-old activist Sophia Mulvaney at the forefront of the protest shows the relevance and unity of the protest.
Before the crowd gathered, Richard Boyd Barrett warned: “If the government decides to control energy prices, protect people's right to a warm home, secure people's incomes or solve the homelessness scandal, we will be back on the streets. And again very soon in even greater numbers. However, "local protests in all major towns and cities across the country" are already planned for November 12 if the demands are not met.
