Dubai: Expatriate businessman and film producer Atlas Ramachandran (80) passed away. He was undergoing treatment at Aster Mankhul Hospital in Dubai due to age-related ailments. He died on Sunday night.
Atlas Jewellery once became a favorite institution of Keralite due to Ramachandran's tireless efforts. He became popular as a model in Atlas advertisements, making him famous with the tagline "Atlas: The Trusted Company of Billions".
Atlas Ramachandran started his career as an employee of Canara Bank. He went to Kuwait in March 1974. He turned to the Jewellery business while working at the Commercial Bank of Kuwait. Atlas Ramachandran started his first jewelry store in December 1981. With more than three decades of heritage, Atlas Jewellery Group had 48 branches across UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
MM Ramachandran was famous as a gold jewelry businessman. Atlas Ramachandran was saddled with crores of debt while the business was going well. He also had to face jail time due to debt. He was arrested in August 2015 after failing to repay loans of more than 55 crore dirhams taken from various banks. Atlas Ramachandran was sentenced to three years in prison by the Dubai Court. After this, efforts were made for his release including the central government.
