Ireland Transport plans: Redesigning Ireland's public transport system will not aim to ban cars

Eamon Ryan has said that redesigning Ireland’s public transport system does not aim to ban cars, but instead "rebalance" it.

The Green Party leader and Minister for Transport declared that it was past time to simply discuss sweeping improvements to Ireland's transportation infrastructure and that now was the time to act.

"There have been enough goals, strategies, and policy measures. What we need to see is delivery on the ground, "Ryan stated.

By 2030, Ireland wants to cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half.

It's not being anti-car or trying to disadvantage motorists, it's trying to make a system that works

In order to do this, the government set goals for the Irish economy's core sectors to reduce emissions by over the course of the next eight years, including 25% for agriculture, 75% for energy, and 50% for transportation.

The construction of a station in Moyross, Limerick City, over the next three years, according to Mr. Ryan, has the potential to be "potentially transformative" for the neighbourhood. Mr. Ryan claimed that transportation initiatives have the ability to assist people and communities across the nation.

Mr. Ryan stated on Monday that they would be "waiting on them every month" as he announced measures to expedite 35 public transportation projects that have previously secured funds.

He told reporters in Dublin's Castletymon Library: "It's not being anti-car or trying to hurt drivers; it's trying to make a system that works."

"However, our current system is ineffective. It is ineffective for drivers of cars, bikes, buses, pedestrians, and cyclists. It's not an effective, well-designed system.

"And that, in my perspective, is no longer best when you have characteristics like Dublin city centre, when you frequently have a multi-lane, one-way system that was designed to send as much traffic through the city centre as possible."

He said that lower public transport fares have encouraged more people to use public transport.

"It’s not saying no to the car, but it’s designing it in a way where it’s better balanced and the car has its place, but it’s not in multi-lane motorway systems through our city centre."

He said that the reliability of Ireland’s public transport system was "not good enough", and that one way of addressing that issue was reallocating road space.
