Chennai: CPM PB member and former state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan (69) passed away. He passed away at Chennai Apollo Hospital around 8.45 pm on Saturday while undergoing treatment for cancer.
Kodiyeri was undergoing treatment at Chennai Apollo Hospital for specialist treatment due to cancer. Kodiyeri was admitted to Apollo on August 29. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan canceled his foreign trip today at the last moment due to his deteriorating health. The Chief Minister was going to Chennai tomorrow to visit Kodiyeri. Kodiyeri resigned as CPM state secretary due to health problems.
He had been seeking treatment for cancer for a long time. Kerala politics has lost a good comrade in the party who was gentle and faced problems with a smile. His wife Vinodini Balakrishnan was also with him. When Kodiyeri went to Chennai for treatment, Kerala shared his wish for a speedy recovery.
He was born on November 16, 1953,in Kannur district, son of Kodiyeri Motummal Kunjunnikurupp (Kallara Talai LP School teacher) and Narayaniamma. Junior Basic School education at Kodiyeri, High School from Kodiyeri Onion Govt. School and completed his undergraduate degree from the college Mahi Mahatma Gandhi Govt. He . Graduated from Thiruvananthapuram University College. Active in politics since his student days, Kodiyeri gradually rose to the highest positions in the party.
Kodiyeri was elected as the State Secretary of SFI in 1973 and remained in that position till 1979. He served 16 months in jail during the Emergency. He has also worked as the All India Joint Secretary of SFI. From 1980 to 1982 he held the charge of DYFI Kannur District President. In 1988, he was elected to the state committee of CPM. From 1990 to 1995, he worked as Kannur district secretary. In 1995, he was elected to the state secretariat in the state convention held in Kollam and in 2002 he was elected to the central committee in the party congress held in Hyderabad.
From 2006 to 2011, he served as Minister in charge of Home and Tourism Departments in Kerala. He was the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the 13th Kerala Legislative Assembly and represented the Thalassery Assembly constituency from 2001 to 2016.
Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was first elected as the state secretary of the CPI (M) at the 21st state conference of the CPI (M) held at Alappuzha on 23 February 2015. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was re-elected as the state secretary of the CPI(M) in the 22nd state conference of the CPI(M) held at Thrissur on 26 February 2018. CPIM Secretary role, resigned on 28th August 2022 due to health reasons.
Kodiyeri's withdrawal came after five months as the state secretary in the third year. The decision was made considering Kodiyeri's request to quit. The decision was taken by the emergency secretariat and the state committee in which Yechury and Karat were also present. The leadership tried till the end to replace the system by keeping Kodiyeri as secretary.
After the state secretariat meeting, Yechury, Pinarayi and MA Baby met Kodiyeri at home and asked him if his leave was over. But at a time when the government is facing a big challenge, Kodiyeri was firm in his position that the permanent secretary is needed. With this, the party decided to change.
CPM leader and former Thalassery MLA M.V. Rajagopal's daughter and employee of Thiruvananthapuram Audio Reprographic Center S.R. Vinodini is his wife. Children: Binoy and Bineesh. Nephews: Dr. Akhila, Rinita.
