Jakarta: The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Indonesia has risen to 162. The earthquake and subsequent aftershocks caused massive damage in the area. Rescue operations are still going on at the site.
Officials said there is no chance of a tsunami. The Meteorological and Geophysics Agency said 25 aftershocks were recorded in the two hours after the quake.
The Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake was felt on land in Sianjur, 75 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta, and at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Several houses and an Islamic boarding school in the area were damaged, the National Disaster Agency said in a statement. Officials are assessing the full extent of the damage caused in the incident.
On the morning of Monday 21st, the earthquake that shook the country occurred in the West Java province of Indonesia. The earthquake on Monday afternoon had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of the 5.6-magnitude earthquake was near the city of Cianjur in mountainous West Java. It is 75 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil confirmed in an Instagram post that the earthquake has killed 162 people and injured 326 people so far.
Offices in the central business district of the capital, Jakarta, were evacuated. Witnesses told Reuters they saw buildings shaking and furniture moving.
