UK: Alzheimer's drug "lecanemab" has been found to reduce memory loss in patients in the early stages of the disease. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, is hailed by experts as long-awaited proof that Alzheimer's disease can be treated.
A trial of 1,795 people with early-onset Alzheimer's found that the drug slowed the progression of the disease by 27 percent compared to the patients sampled. The results were reported by Isai, a Tokyo-based pharmaceutical company that partnered with US biotech firm Biogen to develop lecanemab.
Lecanemab is an experimental drug jointly developed by the companies Biogen and Eisai that is currently in clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
"This trial is an important first step, and I believe it may represent the beginning of the end," he said, adding that it is wonderful to have this confirmation that we are always on the right track, as these results show for the first time the link between slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The first step is the hardest, and now we know what needs to be done to develop effective drugs. It's exciting to think that future work will build on this and we may soon have life-changing treatments for this disease. Professor John Hardy, group leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute at University College London, said:
Alzheimer's patient services need to prepare for the drug with better testing, because it only works in the early stages of the disease. However, the new discovery gives more hope that in the future people with Alzheimer's disease will be able to spend more time with their loved ones.
While this is an important first step, experts stress that more work needs to be done to investigate the drug's side effects.
