JAPAN: offers families the chance to leave congested Tokyo for one million yen per child.

According to a report, in order to stop the country's rural areas from becoming depopulated, the Japanese government plans to grant couples one million yen each child to move away from Tokyo. A family with three kids will receive three million yen under the plan in order to leave Tokyo.

By 2027, the government wants to relocate 10,000 people from Tokyo to rural areas, according to the Guardian. Government assistance to families increased from 290 in 2020 to 1,184 in 2021. In prior years, the sum offered was 300,000 yen. Beginning in April, the new programme will go into action.

Families that have resided in the central Tokyo metropolitan region for more than five years will also get child support monies in addition to the one million yen settlement. The article stated that additional assistance would also be given if the families desired to launch a local enterprise.

Tokyo's population shrank for the first time last year, but policymakers in Japan believe more needs to be done to reduce the city's density and encourage people to settle in "unfashionable" regions of the nation that have been negatively impacted by population ageing, population decline, and the emigration of young people to Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities.

The government is emphasising benefits other than money, such as the availability of "suitable males" in Otari village and the simplicity of childcare.

The total number of births in 2021 was 8,11,604, which was the fewest since records began to be kept in 1899. In comparison, there are currently over 90,500 centenarians, up from just 153 in 1963.
