Clash between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP councillors during the election of standing committee members in the Municipal Corporation, Delhi: When the House met at the Delhi Civic Centre today, the altercation and commotion between the councillors escalated into a fistfight, while a councillor was injured in the clash between the AAP and BJP councillors.
Even today, the third day of the meeting of the the conflict between the councillors did not ease. The male councillors moved to call each other names while the female councillors grabbed each other's hair.
Then at 7:00 PM, the BJP councillors moved to the mayor's chamber demanding that the vote be counted again, but when they were stopped by the security personnel, they approached the mayor's chair from behind and the councillors pushed the mayor's chair down and left with heavy protest. The BJP councillors once again raised a protest against the position that the votes should be counted correctly when the mayor counted one vote as invalid and was about to count the votes and announce the results. With this, during the uproar in the assembly, the mayor, officers and employees of the corporation walked out of the meeting and laid the councillor, who fell unconscious during the argument, on the table and gave him water.
At the same time, BJP member Kamaljeet Sehrawat announced that he would approach the court if the election of the standing committee members is not re-counted. Trouble started when only 242 members of the 250-member municipal corporation voted as eight Congress councilors abstained but one vote was declared invalid during counting.
The BJP councillors came to the scene raising slogans about the annulment of the vote. As per the directions of the Supreme Court, the Delhi Municipal Corporation mayoral election was held on February 22. The standing committee election was to be held on the same day. On that day, all 47 councillors had cast their votes, but in the meantime, some councillors picked up pens and mobile phones and there was a ruckus in the assembly, due to which the election was halted. After that they worked for 18 hours but could not restart the election. Moreover, the House had to be adjourned 13 times during this time and due to this the voting was postponed till today.
