Voting will be held tomorrow in the states of Nagaland and Meghalaya in India. 60 constituencies in Meghalaya will vote tomorrow. The deadline for advertising ended yesterday. Today there will be only silent campaign.
Elaborate arrangements have been made for assembly elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya tomorrow. In Nagaland, the stage is set for peaceful polling in the state tomorrow. Polling officials and polling materials have been sent to their polling booths.
A total of 183 candidates are in the fray. As the BJP has won one seat unopposed, polling will be held for 59 seats. Polling will be held tomorrow in 59 out of 60 constituencies in Nagaland. In Nagaland, 183 candidates including 4 women and 19 independents are in the fray. There are about 13 lakh voters in the state.
Air Correspondent reports that more paramilitary forces have been deployed across the state and vigilance has also been stepped up along the Indo-Myanmar border. The inter-state borders with the states of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh have been closed to avoid any untoward incident.
The DGP along with the Chief Electoral Officer and other senior officials reviewed the law and order situation in Wokha and Mokachung districts in the last 48 hours. More paramilitary forces have been deployed across the state and vigil has also been stepped up along the India-Myanmar border.
In Meghalaya, a polling officer was killed in an accident in which an election party's vehicle was traveling in overturned. The incident took place last night in Potamati village when the election party was on its way to Jangrapara polling station under Thikrikilla constituency in West Garo Hills district.
Two officers were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while others were treated for minor injuries. Chesham CH Marak, who was posted as second polling officer, succumbed to his injuries. The Election Department has announced a financial assistance of Rs 15 lakh to the families of the deceased.
Polling parties have gone to difficult polling stations. 369 candidates, including 36 women, are contesting for the 59 assembly constituencies of the state. Elections in Sohiong constituency postponed due to death of UDP candidate.
Chief Electoral Officer said polling will be webcasted at around 1000 polling stations to ensure fair and free polling in Meghalaya.
