Moscow: Russia's lunar probe Luna-25 has suffered a mysterious malfunction. Luna-25 was unable to perform the required orbital change prior to landing. Ros cosmos had earlier claimed that Luna-25 would land on the Moon's South Pole before India's Chandrayaan-3.

India launched Chandrayaan 3 on July 14. Russia launched Luna-25 shortly after Chandrayaan-3 entered lunar orbit. Meanwhile, Chandrayaan-3 will land on the moon on August 23 after spending two weeks in training tests, despite arriving earlier.

Luna-25 was scheduled to land on the lunar surface on August 21. Luna-25 was supposed to de-orbit around 4 am on Saturday. The Russian space agency Ros cosmos said that the cause of the current situation is a technical fault and the situation is being analyzed.

Since Luna 25 is Russia's first lunar mission since 1976, countries around the world are looking forward to it. This is one of the dream projects of Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is key to his efforts to make Russia a space superpower and move Russian launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Luna-25 was successfully launched from Vostokny Cosmodrome in Russia's Far East on August 11. Luna-25 was scheduled to land on the lunar surface on August 21. Luna-25's mission is to take samples of lunar rock and dust. Luna probe weighs 800 kg.

Following the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is isolated among the world nations. In this case, the general assessment is that the mission is to give a new impetus to Russia's space sector. Despite the European Space Agency's announcement that it will not cooperate with Moscow on future missions related to its activities in Ukraine, Russia has said it will press ahead with its own lunar plans.

These samples are critical to understanding the surface environment before any construction activities on the Moon. Scientists are particularly interested in the Moon's south pole, which believes the polar craters may contain water.
