Dublin: Temple Street Hospital has suffered a serious back surgery failure. According to the HSE, one child has died since the issue came under investigation, while others have had post-operative complications.
Late last year, patient safety concerns were raised about a few children with spina bifida who underwent spine surgery at Temple Street. Postoperative complications and infections are high. Consultant-provided "care" reviews were conducted for 17 children. "Of these 17 children, one child died and several others suffered post-operative complications," these patients and their families already face enormous challenges due to their condition,

According to the HSE, two serious surgical incidents occurred in July and September 2022. The HSE said. An internal review identified "serious spinal surgical events" in the service.
The review stems from very serious concerns CHI identified last year regarding "poor surgical outcomes in surgery, the use of a specific spine surgery technique, and the use of unauthorized implantable devices."
So spine surgeries performed by a consultant at Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin will be reviewed by a UK specialist.
"The primary focus of this external review will be the clinical care provided by an individual consultant based at CHI in Temple Street, who is not currently performing surgeries and has made a referral to the Medical Council in this regard," the HSE said in a statement on Monday.
CHI regrets the lapses in child care. CHI continues to engage with these families and will continue to provide needed support. The HSE informed.
