Halifax: Tropical Storm Lee batters the coast of New England and Maritime Canada. Along with the strong winds, nearly 300,000 households in the US and Canada lost power.
More than 170,000 households were affected by power outages caused by storm surges and flooding. The center of the storm made landfall between Shelburne and Yarmouth counties in Nova Scotia in the late afternoon.
Some areas in southwest Nova Scotia are already affected by the storm. 161,000 homes were without power in Nova Scotia and more than 29,000 in New Brunswick. More than 92,000 homes are experiencing outages in the New England area. The numbers are expected to increase Saturday afternoon due to wind gusts, downed trees and power lines.
Environment Canada said high waves between four and six are possible along Novascoshi's central Atlantic coast and from Shelburne County east to Guysborough County.
