Following approval by the National Transport Authority (NTA), the new national "Maximum Taxi Fare" taxi rate will rise by an average of 9 per cent. The rate hike will be effective from December 1.
The NTA said the fare change was in line with the rising costs associated with running a taxi. Between 2022 and 2024, the cost of operating a taxi has increased by around 9 to 11 percent.
The NTA has announced the extension of taxi "special fares". These charges currently apply to taxi journeys between 8pm on Christmas Eve and 8am on Stephen's Day and 8pm on New Year's Day and 8am on New Year's Day.
As per NTA's new determination, the special rates will be applicable throughout the year and during peak weekend hours i.e. midnight to 4 am on Saturdays and Sundays. The NTA said the decision is an effort to encourage more drivers at night.
Also the pre-booking fee will increase from €2 to €3 during peak weekend hours. NTA chief executive Anne Graham said the fare hike "addresses the rising operating costs drivers face while balancing passenger demands".
The NTA said it will review the impact of the fare hike in 12 months. The fare hike follows a review of the national maximum taxi fare by the NTA. The National Transport Authority said that the taxi fares are implemented every two years to keep pace with changes in operating costs and maintain availability of quality taxi services across the country.
