A shocking case of suspected arsenic poisoning has emerged from Torres, in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, where a 61-year-old woman allegedly laced a Christmas cake with the toxic substance, resulting in the deaths of three family members.
The accused, Terezinha Silva dos Anjos, reportedly added arsenic to a cake she prepared for a family gathering. Among the victims were 43-year-old Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos, 58-year-old Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, and 65-year-old Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, who succumbed to the poison after consuming the cake.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement officials conducted a search of Terezinha’s residence, uncovering expired items, including a bottle of medication containing a suspicious white liquid, now under analysis. Both Terezinha and a 10-year-old girl who also consumed the cake remain hospitalized.
Autopsy reports confirmed the presence of arsenic in the bodies of the deceased. Investigators revealed that Terezinha herself had the highest levels of arsenic in her system, as she reportedly consumed two slices of the cake. Several family members had earlier complained about the dessert having a “peppery” taste, raising initial suspicion.
Police are also examining whether the death of Terezinha’s husband in September, previously attributed to foodborne illness, might be connected to this incident, given the similar circumstances of arsenic poisoning.
The Toxicity of Arsenic
Arsenic is a highly toxic metallic element classified as a category one carcinogen by the European Union. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), inorganic arsenic exposure can occur through contaminated drinking water, food preparation, irrigation of crops, industrial processes, and smoking. Chronic exposure to arsenic poses severe health risks, including cancer and organ failure.
Authorities Call for Vigilance
Police Chief Marcos Vinicius Veloso emphasized the need for thorough investigation to uncover any additional connections and ensure justice for the victims. The case has prompted renewed discussions about food safety and the dangers of toxic substances in household items.
As forensic testing continues, the community remains shaken by this disturbing incident, awaiting further clarity on the events that unfolded during what was meant to be a festive occasion.
