Indian-Origin Man Dies After Violent Arrest in Australia

 Melbourne – Gaurav Kundi (42), an Indian-origin man, has died in Australia after sustaining critical injuries during a police arrest. The incident occurred after officers allegedly pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck and struck his head against a police vehicle.

Kundi suffered severe brain injuries during the arrest and had been on life support for nearly two weeks before succumbing to his injuries.

The incident took place in the early hours of May 29 on a public street in eastern Adelaide. Police patrols reportedly noticed an altercation between Gaurav and his partner, Amritpal Kaur, and suspected a domestic violence situation. Officers intervened and attempted to detain Gaurav.

According to eyewitness accounts, Gaurav was forcibly pinned to the ground, with an officer pressing his knee against Kundi’s neck. He soon lost consciousness.

Following the incident, Amritpal told the media that the couple had only been arguing and denied any domestic violence. She acknowledged that Gaurav had been drinking but insisted that he did not act violently toward her. She further alleged that police used excessive force, including driving his head into a vehicle during the arrest.

South Australia Police confirmed that Kundi's death would be treated as a custodial death and investigated thoroughly. Police stated that Gaurav had been aggressive during the arrest and subsequently became unresponsive.

The Major Crime Investigation Branch has been tasked with determining the exact cause and circumstances of Kundi’s death. Their findings will be submitted to the State Coroner. The Public Integrity Office will oversee the conduct investigation related to the officers involved in the incident.
