The plane skidded off the runway and hit a wall at Muan International Airport in southwestern South Korea, South Korea's state news agency reported.
The Jeju Air plane was returning from Bangkok, Thailand, with 175 passengers and six flight attendants on board when it crashed during landing.
Two people were found alive, and rescue operations are still ongoing. Emergency services are trying to rescue those on the tail of the plane, an airport official said.
The passengers on board included 173 South Koreans and two Thais. The cause of the crash is not clear, but a bird strike may have caused the landing gear to malfunction.
Unconfirmed footage uploaded to social media shows the plane skidding off the runway and hitting a wall before part of the plane explodes, while other footage shows a large plume of black smoke rising into the sky.
One flight attendant and one passenger have been rescued so far, and 32 fire trucks have been deployed to the crash site, South Korea’s firefighting agency said in a statement.
