Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kuwait on Saturday for a historic two-day visit, marking the first trip to the Gulf nation by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years. The visit comes at the invitation of Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, and is expected to deepen the partnership between the two countries.
Ahead of his departure, PM Modi described the visit as an opportunity to "chalk out a roadmap for a futuristic partnership" with Kuwait. He emphasized the strong trade and energy partnership shared by the nations, highlighting their common interest in fostering peace, security, stability, and prosperity in the West Asia region.
In an X post, he said, “I eagerly look forward to meeting the Indian diaspora in Kuwait who have immensely contributed to strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two nations."

1. Strengthening Bilateral Ties:
During his visit, PM Modi is set to hold discussions with Kuwait’s top leadership, including the Amir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister. The discussions will focus on bilateral investment treaties, defense cooperation, and avenues for future collaboration.
Arun Kumar Chatterjee, Secretary (Overseas Indian Affairs) at the Ministry of External Affairs, stated, “The visit will not only consolidate existing partnerships but also unveil new avenues for future cooperation, reinforcing shared values and building a dynamic partnership for the future."
2. Engagement with the Indian Diaspora:
PM Modi’s arrival was met with a warm welcome from the Indian community in Kuwait. At his hotel, he interacted with members of the diaspora and enjoyed cultural performances showcasing folk traditions from Kerala and other Indian states.
3. Honoring Indian Workers:
As part of his itinerary, PM Modi visited a labor camp in Kuwait’s Mina Abdullah area, which houses approximately 1,500 Indian nationals. The visit underlined the government’s commitment to the welfare of Indian workers abroad. “The idea of the visit is to express the importance the government of India attaches to our workers,” Chatterjee noted.

The Prime Minister also met Abdullah Al Baroun and Abdul Lateef Al Nesef, the individuals behind the Arabic translations of India’s iconic epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Their efforts reflect the growing appreciation of Indian culture in the Arab world.
5. Participation in the Gulf Cup Ceremony:
PM Modi expressed gratitude to Kuwait’s leadership for inviting him to the inauguration of the Arabian Gulf Cup, a premier sporting event in the region. “I look forward to being a part of this celebration of athletic excellence and regional unity,” he said.
The visit is expected to bolster India’s ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), an influential bloc comprising Kuwait, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar. Discussions are also expected to pave the way for greater collaboration in trade, defense, and investment.
