The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially announced the recipients of the prestigious National Sports Awards for 2024, with four distinguished athletes being honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
The recipients include 22-year-old Manu Bhaker, who etched her name in history as independent India’s first athlete to win two Olympic medals in a single edition. Bhaker secured bronze in both the 10m air pistol individual and the 10m air pistol mixed team events during the Tokyo Olympics in August.
Also receiving the Khel Ratna Award is Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian hockey team, who led the team to a remarkable second consecutive bronze medal at the same Olympics.
Additionally, 18-year-old D. Gukesh, who made history as the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, is recognized for his stellar individual performance as well as his instrumental role in helping the Indian team secure a historic gold at the Chess Olympiad last year.
Para-athlete Praveen Kumar, the T64 high-jump champion at the Paris Paralympics, also joins the list of awardees. The T64 classification is specifically for athletes with one or both legs missing below the knee who use a prosthetic leg for running.
The awards will be conferred by the President of India during a special ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
