In a significant achievement against terrorism, Pakistan's security forces have eliminated 22 terrorists and injured 18 others during multiple intelligence-based operations (IBOs) in the Tirah valley of Khyber district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, since December 14, the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), reported on Thursday.
The ISPR’s statement detailed a surge in terrorist activities in the Tirah valley targeting security personnel and civilians, leading to numerous casualties. In response, security forces initiated extensive IBOs to restore peace in the region.
“These operations have successfully neutralized 22 terrorists and injured 18 others. The security forces remain steadfast in their commitment to eradicating terrorism from the country,” the statement said, adding that the operations will continue until lasting peace is achieved.
Current Situation in Tirah Valley
The valley, which has seen sporadic encounters between terrorists and security forces, remains a focal point in the military's anti-terrorism efforts. On Tuesday, security forces neutralized two terrorists during an encounter in the region.
Armed militants, linked to various banned organizations such as Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Lashkar-i-Islam, Amarat-i-Islami, and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, have reportedly sought refuge in hilly terrains and vacant houses, evading public and military scrutiny.
Local sources revealed that these militants had vacated the valley's plains and relocated to villages like Sanda Paal, Dray Naghari, and Daroota, which had been deserted by residents anticipating military operations after a rise in attacks. Residents of Kamarkhel, Takhtaki, Ghulam Ali, and Sukh villages described incidents where armed militants demanded food and shelter, causing anxiety among locals despite no direct harm being inflicted.
Broader Terrorism Trends in Pakistan
Pakistan has seen a troubling rise in terrorism, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, with the TTP resuming attacks after breaking a fragile ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022.
A 2024 report by the Center for Research and Security Studies highlighted a grim picture, noting that 2024 was the deadliest year for Pakistan's security forces in a decade. The report cited 444 terror attacks, resulting in the loss of 685 security personnel.
The ISPR reported that security forces conducted 59,775 operations last year, during which 925 terrorists were killed, and 383 military officers and soldiers were martyred.
A Call to Eliminate the Terror Threat
The security forces remain resolute in their mission to eliminate terrorist elements and restore stability. "The operations in Tirah valley are part of the broader strategy to ensure peace and safety for the people of Pakistan," the ISPR reiterated.
The ongoing efforts in the Tirah valley underscore the relentless resolve of Pakistan's armed forces in combating the menace of terrorism and safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.
