New Delhi [India], February 8: As trends for the Delhi Assembly elections become clearer, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would return to power in the national capital after a 27-year hiatus.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP will form a government in Delhi," Scindia stated during a press conference in Gwalior.
Scindia also took aim at the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, describing the surge in bank Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) during its tenure as "cancerous." He highlighted the progress made under the BJP-led government in reducing NPAs from 11.5% in 2014 to 2.6% at present. Additionally, he pointed out a significant increase in infrastructure spending from Rs 2 lakh crore under the UPA to Rs 11 lakh crore under the Modi administration.
Election Trends and BJP’s Confidence
According to the latest updates from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP is leading in 46 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is ahead in 24 seats. The majority mark required to form the government in the 70-member Delhi Assembly is 36 seats.
BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi also voiced optimism regarding the party’s prospects, stating that the final outcome would be even more decisive in favor of the BJP. "We are waiting for the final results, but we believe that the verdict will reflect the trust people have in PM Modi’s leadership. It’s a positive development for us," he told ANI.
With early trends signaling a BJP resurgence, party workers gathered outside the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, celebrating with fireworks, music, and dance. Senior BJP leaders, including Delhi President Virendra Sachdeva and Vice President Baijayant Panda, convened at the party office to assess the ongoing results.
Setbacks for AAP’s Top Leadership
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is trailing in the New Delhi constituency by 1,174 votes. Similarly, AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj is behind BJP’s Shikha Roy in the Greater Kailash seat by 1,003 votes. In Kalkaji, Delhi Minister Atishi is trailing BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri by a margin of 3,231 votes. The only prominent AAP leader currently leading is Manish Sisodia, who holds an advantage of 2,438 votes in Jangpura.
Reacting to AAP’s electoral struggles, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva remarked that Delhi voters had rejected the governance model of Arvind Kejriwal in favor of PM Modi’s leadership. "The state of Delhi—poor water quality, broken roads, sanitation issues, pollution in the Yamuna—reflects Kejriwal’s governance, which people have chosen to reject," he said.
Sachdeva also accused AAP’s leadership of betraying the public trust. "Their top leaders, including Kejriwal, Sisodia, and Atishi, are symbols of corruption. The people of Delhi will not forgive them," he asserted.
Campaign Themes and Election Background
Polling for the Delhi Assembly elections was held on February 5, with a voter turnout of 60.54%. Throughout the campaign, the BJP focused on issues such as pollution in the Yamuna River and the alleged extravagant renovation of Kejriwal’s official residence. Prime Minister Modi had referred to Kejriwal’s leadership using the terms "Aapda" (disaster) and "Sheesh Mahal" (glass palace), criticizing the AAP government’s priorities.
As vote counting progresses, all eyes remain on the final results, which could mark a historic shift in Delhi’s political landscape.
