Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized that the state’s budget for the financial year 2025-26 aligns with the principles of Sanatan culture’s “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah”, focusing on the upliftment of the underprivileged, farmers, youth, and women. Presenting the budget in the legislative assembly, the Chief Minister stated that education, employment, and entrepreneurship remain the government’s top priorities. He highlighted that nearly 60 million people in the state have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty, and the government is now working towards the ambitious goal of achieving zero poverty.
Key Budget Allocations and Economic Outlook
The Chief Minister elaborated on the government’s approach to poverty alleviation, stating that under this initiative, the poorest families in every gram panchayat are being identified and provided with essential resources and economic opportunities. The total budget size has been set at ₹8.08 lakh crore, reflecting a 9.8% increase compared to the 2024-25 budget.
- Education Sector: A provision of ₹1.06 lakh crore has been allocated, accounting for 13% of the total budget, making Uttar Pradesh a leader in educational spending.
- Agriculture & Rural Development: A budget of ₹89,353 crore has been set aside for agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, dairy, fisheries, cooperative development, rural development, Panchayati Raj, and rural water supply under the Namami Gange program.
- Healthcare Sector: Over ₹50,550 crore has been allocated for public health, medical education, AYUSH, and family welfare.
- Capital Expenditure: The budget includes a capital expenditure of ₹2.25 lakh crore, indicating significant investment in infrastructure and development.
Economic Growth and Fiscal Health
The Chief Minister highlighted that Uttar Pradesh’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has seen remarkable growth, rising from ₹12.89 lakh crore in 2017-18 to an estimated ₹27.51 lakh crore in 2024-25. The state’s fiscal deficit stands at 2.97% of GSDP, which remains well within the 3.5% limit prescribed by the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act set by the Reserve Bank of India.
A recent NITI Aayog report on states’ fiscal performance has recognized Uttar Pradesh as a “Front Runner” state, highlighting an 8.9-point improvement in the state’s consolidated fiscal health index between 2018-19 and 2022-23.
